How to Respond to the Myth that Nothing can prevent or slow Alzheimer’s
I’ve been reminded 4 times in the last 3 days on public TV that not everyone is as enlightened as you are! June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness month, but despite the various new revelations to the contrary awareness is lacking and the myth persists in the media and traditional medical minds that: “Nothing can be done to prevent, or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).” This standard old school rhetoric has now been soundly shown to be false! But it appears we will need your help in dispelling this destructive myth from the minds of your friends and loved ones. And why is this misinformaiton so destructive and dangerous?
This disempowering message, has likely discouraged millions of seniors from doing the very things needed and shown to be effective to delay or avoid this plague. As one elderly gentleman told me, “I don’t even want to know if I’m at risk for Alzheimer’s as there is nothing I can do to prevent it.”
So how can you respond to such dogmatic disabling ignorance? (By ingnorance I mean ignoring the latest evidence.) How can you correct this misinformation and provide the hope that is needed to make the effort required to delay or prevent this terrible epidemic?
In January I provided a decent review of this research, citing several studies from Dr. Kivipelto of the Karolinska institute in Stockholm, Dr. Bredesen from UCLA, doctors Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, from Loma Linda Medical Center, and Dr. Fotuhi former Science Director for the Alzheimer’s Association. All of these, highly qualified and esteemed Alzheimer’s experts have shown in empirical studies that Alzheimer’s can in fact be delayed, prevented, and in many if not most cases reversed if caught soon enough. You may want to reread and share that newsletter with any doubters. And/or simply share this link to a fascinating interview between a world renown heart surgeon and Dr. Bredesen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK0RqkErLSA
Note Bredesen has now turned around 100’s of well documented cases of cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s, even in people who had inherited the ApoE-4 “Alzheimer’s” gene from both parents! These individuals definitely had AD, no question, and yet he was able to reverse their decline, and even restore brain cell volume in the hippocampus! – the memory center of the brain. It’s reduced volume is a hallmark of advanced Alzheimer’s. Obviously, if you can reverse Alzheimer’s you can prevent it, as Dr. Bredesen asserts in his interview, and now best seller, The End of Alzheimer’s. Any sincere skeptic ought to read that book.
In the first chapter of our book, How to Maintain A Healthy Brain and Escape the Epidemic of Alzheimer’s, we site these and several other studies, like the Wales study, which showed a 60% reduction in all cause dementia cases, including Alzheimer’s, following a few simple lifestyle measures over time. For a copy of this chapter or book email your request to David@ABCbrain.org (Chap 1 only is fee, the PDF book costs just $10).
If that isn’t enough here are a few more tidbits you can share. On July 20, 2017, in the most definitive review of this research to date, 24 world class experts commissioned by Lancet to report on this topic noted that even though “One systematic review found no evidence that any drug interventions delay conversion to dementia” p.5. “There is good evidence that treatment of hypertension reduces dementia incidence [including Alzheimer’s]…, and improvement in brain reserve combined with interventions known to prevent damage are ways to promote resilience.”
Commenting on that study Lon Schneider, MD, from the University of Southern California a co-author of the Commission study, noted: “Overall, there is good potential for prevention and,… Effective dementia prevention and care could transform the future for society and vastly improve living and dying for individuals with dementia and their families. Acting now on what we already know can make this difference happen.” (July 22, 2017 interview – alz.org)
And if that isn’t evidence enough, we have this statement from the extra cautious Alzheimer’s Association themselves:
In their press release dated July 19, 2017 the Alzheimer’s Association announced
The launch of their $20 million “LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION TRIAL IN THE U.S. TO PREVENT COGNITIVE DECLINE.” In their announcement they noted:
At AAIC 2014, Miia Kivipelto, M.D., Ph.D., Professor at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden and the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland, and colleagues reported on the results of the FINGER Study – the first randomized controlled trial showing that it is possible to prevent cognitive decline using a multi-domain lifestyle intervention among older at-risk individuals….The FINGER model is now being replicated in the United States, Europe, Singapore, and Australia – including people from a variety of geographical and cultural backgrounds.” (And just so we are clear, that “cognitive decline” includes Alzheimer’s.)
The truth is, as Dr. Bredesen points out in his dementia reversal course for practitioners, which I am now completing as part of my continuing ed, Alzheimer’s, like a variety of other disorders, including heart disease, results from a variety of preventable or modifiable risk factors, like the over consumption of sugar or diabetes, malnutrition, high blood pressure, hearing disorders, smoking, chronic and oxidative stress and anxiety, gingivitis, lack of sleep, etc.. These are all disorders or behaviors that can be prevented, or at least slowed down or modified, and by doing so, most cases of Alzheimer’s could be avoided – the Bredesen and Sherzai research suggests up to 90%! In fact some forms of AD may be easier to reverse than some other types of dementia, like vascular dementia or lewy bodies dementia.
In the UMass study I was involved in, nearly six years ago, we reversed symptoms in nearly 70% of those with MD diagnosed AD, and other age-related cognitive decline, with a simple nutritional supplement. (I’ve facilitated many reversals since.) And while that formula is not currently available to the public, these ingredients plus 6 others shown to impact AD symptoms are now available in the Memoryze® drink mix. If you know of someone concerned about their memory or getting AD, that would certainly be an easy effective place to start, as improved nutrition, while not the only thing to do, can be very helpful – with measurable results. Go to Memoryze.com to learn more about this new formula, or email me and I will send you info on how you can obtain a 40% trial discount, along with a free copy of How to Maintain A Healthy Brain and Escape the Epidemic of Alzheimer’s. Just email me at David@ABCBrain.org With your help and a few lifestyle modifications we can put an end to this devastating brain wasting disorder! Please pass the word… Alzheimer’s CAN be prevented, in most cases, or at least slowed, if addressed soon enough.
