{"id":772,"date":"2015-01-11T17:46:01","date_gmt":"2015-01-11T05:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/?p=772"},"modified":"2015-01-11T19:53:31","modified_gmt":"2015-01-11T07:53:31","slug":"alzheimers-prevention-new-hope-rising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/alzheimers-prevention-new-hope-rising\/","title":{"rendered":"Alzheimer&#8217;s Prevention &#8211; New Hope Rising!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Prior to 2014 the official position was that Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD) and most other forms of dementia, and related symptoms, could not be prevented or reversed. But in 2014 and last week this gloomy picture was dispelled with the following revelations, the most compelling of which just appeared last week \u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\"><i>Journal of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease.<\/i><\/strong><b style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><em style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">(see details and link below in this article)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">The Karolinska\/FINGER Preliminary Findings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">In my <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/alzheimers-prevention-is-now-possible-i-told-you-so-new-study-shows-how\/\"><strong>August Newsletter<\/strong> <\/a>I reported on the July International Conference on Alzheimer\u2019s Disease in Stockholm. At that conference Dr. Miia Kivipelto from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden electrified the crowd with her blockbuster report on the Finnish Geriatric (FINGER) Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability. This ongoing study involves more than 1200 seniors at high risk for Alzheimer\u2019s. These participants were already experiening cognitive decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The results of this large controlled study showed that improvements in lifestyle including physical and mental activities, a healthy diet and social support had a significant beneficial effect on the participant\u2019s cognitive performance. Not only was their decline arrested, in most of the study group it was actually reversed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">In her presentation, Dr. Kivipelto stated, \u201cThese findings show that\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">prevention is possible<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">, and that it may be good to start early,\u201d noting that \u201cWith so many negative trials for Alzheimer\u2019s drugs reported lately, it\u2019s good that we may have something that everyone can do now to lower their risk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What was so impressive about this study was the fact that they didn\u2019t just improve health or reduce risk in healthy individuals, they actually reversed symptoms and effected improvements in individuals already in cognitive decline or well on their way to Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Korean Confirmation\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">In late October an article that appeared in the journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics corroborated this finding in a similar elderly lifestyle study conducted in Korea. Once again those who improved their diet and lifestyle showed improved cognitive function, and thus reduced risk for dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">But what about those already diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s? Is it too late for them, or is escape from death by Alzheimer\u2019s still possible at that stage?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">UCLA Study Astounds Skeptics<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before that in <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/reversal-of-alzheimers-and-cognitive-decline-at-ucla-using-our-program\/\"><strong>early \u00a0October we reported<\/strong><\/a> on a truly remarkable and encouraging paper published online in the new open access scientific journal AGING. This report described a \u201cnovel,\u201d personalized therapeutic program for individuals diagnosed with significant cognitive impairment or Alzheimer\u2019s. This treatment plan was developed by Dale E. Bredesen, MD at the MaryS.EastonCenter for Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Research at the University of California in Los Angeles. The protocol was based on what we know about the underlying causes of AD.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Like the Korean and Finland (FINGER) study, it involved multiple modalities \u201cdesigned to achieve metabolic enhancement for neurodegeneration (MEND).\u201d In other words it was a multifaceted approach focused on addressing various factors affecting brain health. However, this program was more rigorous and including hormones, and specific nutritional interventions to address cell metabolism, circulation and inflammation, as well as meditation, Yoga and other brain stimulating activities \u2013 like daily reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Dr. Bredesen notes that \u201dBased on the hypothesis that AD results from an imbalance in an extensive plasticity [ever changing] network, the therapy should address as many network components as possible, with the idea that a combination approach may create an effect that is more than the sum of the effects of many monotherapeutics.\u201d (A synergistic effect.) Dr. Bredesen identified at least 36 things that can be out of balance in Alzheimer\u2019s, but fortunately most of these can be rectified by simply applying what we already know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">The point here is that there are many things that can go wrong and contribute to AD, and every \u201cbody\u201d is different. So, although most people with cognitive impairments have some things in common, a personalized program for each individual, focused on their particular issues and needs, will likely be best. At least that is the approach Dr. Bredesen took with the 10 participants in his study. And amazingly\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">9 out of the 10 subjects<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0with significant cognitive impairments,<\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0<\/b><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">including several with diagnosed AD, improved<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">! The only one who did not improve was in the later stages of Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Dr. Bredesen, being an MD, was able to employ a broader array of interventions than those used in the FINGER study, including medications and hormone replacement to address related disorders. But most of the interventions he used like dietary changes, yoga, meditation, periodic fasting, mental and physical exercise, as well as various nutritional supplements, are\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">available to most anyone in the US without prescription.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">The Joint International Review of AD Research<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In October I also reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/why-nutritional-supplements-are-essential-to-seniors-brain-health\/\">an international investigation<\/a> conducted by some of the best and brightest Alzheimer\u2019s researchers in the world \u2013 from France, the Netherlands, and the United States. It was a massive review of more than 3000 studies from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">In short, what they found in this monumental review was that\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">nutritional deficiencies play a major role<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0early on in the development of Alzheimer\u2019s. This was a major revelation to many, with huge implications for the prevention and management of Alzheimer\u2019s, as you will see below<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Moreover, contributing factors included not only what they ate, i.e. how nutritious the foods were that they ate, but\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">how well they digested and absorbed the nutrients<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0from the foods they ate, as well as,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">changes in metabolism,<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0and nutrient\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">depletion due to their body\u2019s \u201cincreased utilization of nutrients\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0needed to fight off the disease processes. So even if a person ate well, they could still end up with nutritional deficiencies, due to age, genetics and other unique biological factors exacerbated by aging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">This then set the stage for what might be the most significant and hopeful study yet in the battle to prevent or arrest Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">January 2015 \u2013 Even Greater Help and Hope<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Finally on January 7th 2015 the Journal of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease offered online to subscribers, an advanced copy of our\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/iospress.metapress.com\/content\/c640rl247w38x217\/\">UMass-Lowell study\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>on the effects of the NF (nutraceutical formulation now sold under the name Perceptiv\u2122 ) on 106 individuals with diagnosed Alzheimer\u2019s.1<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Unlike the UCLA project, this was not a pilot or preliminary study, but a &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">gold standard,&#8221; double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-site,<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/iospress.metapress.com\/content\/c640rl247w38x217\/\"><strong>phase II clinical study<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0of the effects of a nutritional supplement, containing a variety of vitamins and other nutrients, on mental abilities associated with Alzheimer&#8217;s. This was the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">sixth successful clinica<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">l study with this formulation, which was developed over the past 20 years by Dr. Thomas Shea and colleagues at UMass-Lowell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Basically, the study showed\u00a0<strong>statistically-significant improvements or arrested decline<\/strong>\u00a0in memory and other cognitive abilities (as measured by live standardized tests) in subjects diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s who received the supplement, as compared to subjects who received a placebo.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">(If you would like an uncorrected pdf \u201cauthors\u201d copy email me at DavidRJL@aol.com (2) \u00a0But as of yet, while they are still charging for this, I am not allowed to post that here. Although you can purchase a copy online\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\" href=\"http:\/\/iospress.metapress.com\/content\/c640rl247w38x217\/\">there<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">. But my copy is quite complete, with few alterations if you want to see the science and stats now.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are the outcome highlights.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 1<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/4-Study-graphs0147_edited.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-777 alignleft\" alt=\"EPSON scanner image\" src=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/4-Study-graphs0147_edited.jpg\" width=\"909\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/4-Study-graphs0147_edited.jpg 1010w, https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/4-Study-graphs0147_edited-300x77.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 909px) 100vw, 909px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Results after 3 months. The Clox test measures spatial abilities, reasoning and memory. The DRS is the Dementia Rating Scale which measures a variety of mental abilities. The AMSS adjusts for age and the AEMSS for age and education level. The forth chart shows the memory subscale. The dark block is where most of the scores fell. The thin line shows the range from highest to the lowest in ea category.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">As you can see on each of the graphs, although the scores varied widely, after 3 months, the majority of those in the NF group, taking the Nutraceutical (nutritional)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Formulation,<b>\u00a0<\/b><strong>performed significantly better<\/strong>\u00a0on these tests of attention, memory, reasoning, comprehension, etc., than those in the Placebo group, who took a pill that looked identical but did not contain these nutrients.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Moreover, these were not individuals with just \u201cmild\u201d cognitive impairment. These graphs show the results, in terms of performance or ability, for those in our study who\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">had MD diagnosed Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">. And of course what they show is that within 3 months this nutritional supplement made a significant difference in memory and other abilities for most (approximately 80%) of those who took it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">This next graph shows the composite progress over time, as measured by the dementia rating scale. This is for all of those in our study, including both individuals with mild cognitive impairment, not yet diagnosed with dementia, as well as those with dementia or Alzheimer\u2019s. These were the results over a nine month period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Figure 2<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/1-diagram-b_edited.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-778 alignnone\" alt=\"1 diagram b_edited\" src=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/1-diagram-b_edited.jpg\" width=\"377\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/1-diagram-b_edited.jpg 419w, https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/1-diagram-b_edited-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">While most participants in both groups showed some improvement at 3 months\u2014likely due to greater familiarity and reduced test anxiety\u2014there was a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">major difference in the magnitude of effect.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0As noted above, nearly\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">80% of those initially on the nutritional formulation showed improvements<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0compared to 53% in the placebo group, and their improvements were\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">significantly greater<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0both in mood and memory, with no significant adverse side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">After 3 months the institutional review board monitoring this study, decided we had made our point, reinforcing earlier studies that this formulation can make a significant difference, and therefore they felt it only ethical to allow those who had been in the control group to take it as well. That is what \u201copen label\u201d means. So after that everyone was taking NF (now sold as Perceptiv\u2122) and everyone knew what they were getting \u2013 i.e. the label matched the contents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Lessons Learned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were many lessons learned from this study, however, there are three in particular that seem most relevant for our purposes that I would like to review with you. First&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">A Pill Alone May Not Be Enough<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you look carefully at the graphs above you will see the single lines extending below the black blocks. These represent those individuals who did not fare so well. These are the 20% or so who did not make much, if any progress, and were more likely to continued their downward spiral.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these improved after 3 months, other may have had strong genetic factors influencing their decline, such as the Apoe-4 \u201cAlzheimer\u2019s\u201d gene. We know that genetics and family history do play a significant role in many if not most cases of Alzheimer\u2019s. However,\u00a0<strong>others<\/strong>\u00a0in our study with a documented family history and<b>\u00a0<\/b><strong>likely genetic predisposition for Alzheimer\u2019s made great progress!<\/strong>\u00a0In fact Dr. Shea has shown in other animal studies that the NF formulation can, to a significant degree, help to\u00a0<strong>compensate for bad genes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, it would be helpful to know why some did better on this formula than others, i.e what other factors made a difference here. Generally we did not track other lifestyle variables in this study, like diet, exercise etc., but Dr. Morrow and I did note a few of these from our conversations with family members.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">One of the first things we observed, was that those who\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">did not eat a nutritious diet<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">, who did not eat a variety of vegetables, for example,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">did not progress<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0as well as those who did. On the other hand those who consumed significant quantities of sugar, ice-cream, or other sweet treats, pastries or other high carb \u201cjunk food,\u201d did not progress as well as those who did not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Second, although these were not carefully measured, a few other apparent lifestyle deterrents to progress included,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">lack of physical or mental exercise, lack of water intake<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">, often associated with a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">urinary tract infection,<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">lack of sleep or stress<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Third, it was also interesting that a high percentage of those in our study were on a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">statin (cholesterol) or antacid<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0medication. Dr. Shea also observed in previous studies that those who did not do so well were generally older and took more medications than those who made better progress. Of course it\u2019s hard to say how much those contributed. Was it the medication or the disorder the medication was taken for. Actually Dr. Perlmutter suggests it could be both. But these seem worth considering, and we have written about those in other publications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">The point I want to make here is that researchers are now coming to realize is that the only way to ensure a healthy brain and avoid the brain damaging plagues of our age is to\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">develop a brain-healthy diet and lifestyle<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">. And as we get older a good targeted higher potency<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0<\/b><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">nutritional supplement<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0or two may be needed as well. That seems to be the only approach that can create a<\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0<\/b><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">synergistic effect<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0powerful enough to provide all that our body and brain need to succeed as we advance in years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">The Sooner the Better<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Previous studies have shown that the Alzheimer\u2019s disease process is generally on a very long continuum, that usually begins\u00a0<strong>20 years or more before<\/strong>\u00a0significant symptoms arise or decline becomes apparent. And the earlier we address these deviant processes the easier they will be to overcome.\u00a0Therefore, as might be expected, the positive results in this study were more pronounced for those in the early to mid stages of Alzheimer\u2019s rather than the later stages.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">This also supports the findings of the International Review noted above, which suggesting that Alzheimer&#8217;s is associated with greater nutritional deficits as we age. And that nutrients may be harder to assimilate as we age, which emphasizes the importance of\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">early nutritional interventions<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0to arrest or reverse symptom decline. Because the further down that road we allow ourselves to go, the harder or less likely it is that we will be able to regain full mental health and abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">More than Symptom Relief<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">One of the limitations of this particular study was that, although we were able to show\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">symptom reversal<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0in individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s disease, our measures were not sufficient or appropriate to show disease remission.
