{"id":719,"date":"2014-10-10T03:48:25","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T15:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/?p=719"},"modified":"2014-10-25T02:39:20","modified_gmt":"2014-10-24T14:39:20","slug":"reversal-of-alzheimers-and-cognitive-decline-at-ucla-using-our-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/reversal-of-alzheimers-and-cognitive-decline-at-ucla-using-our-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Reversal of Alzheimer\u2019s Symptoms and Cognitive Decline at UCLA Using Our Approach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/head.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-618 alignleft\" title=\"head\" alt=\"head\" src=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/head.bmp\" width=\"151\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a>On 27 September 2014 a monumental research paper was published online in the revolutionary new open access scientific <a href=\"http:\/\/www.impactaging.com\/papers\/v6\/n9\/pdf\/100690.pdf\">journal AGING.<\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\"><br \/>\nThis report describes a \u201cnovel,\u201d comprehensive, and personalized therapeutic program developed by Dale E. Bredesen, MD at the MaryS.EastonCenter for Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Research, UCLA. The program is based on what we know about the underlying causes of Alzheimer\u2019s disease (AD). Like the Finland (FINGER) study discussed last month (<a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/alzheimers-prevention-is-now-possible-i-told-you-so-new-study-shows-how\/\">see below<\/a>) it involves multiple modalities \u201cdesigned to achieve metabolic enhancement for neurodegeneration (MEND).\u201d In other words it is multifaceted program focused on improving various\u00a0metabolic factors contributing to brain health including hormones, nutrition, especially inflammatory mediators and those affecting glucose and cell metabolism, and exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Bredesen notes that\u00a0&#8220;Based on the hypothesis that AD results from an imbalance in an extensive plasticity network, <b>the therapy should address as many network components as possible,<\/b> with the idea that a combination approach may create an effect that is more than the sum of the effects of many monotherapeutics.&#8221; (A synergistic approach)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">If this sounds at all familiar to you, that\u2019s because this \u201cnovel\u201d &#8220;synergistic&#8221; approach is pretty much what we have been teaching on this website and in our classes for the past 4 years \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/living-a-brain-healthy-lifestyle\/\">a combined synergistic approach<\/a> involving good nutrition (a healthy diet and supplements), <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/practical-physical-exercise-tips\/\">physical<\/a> and mental activity (click on quadrants of the brain to the right), <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/hormone-enhancement-for-better-brain-health\/\">hormone enhancement<\/a>, getting a <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/sleep-is-your-brain-getting-enough-how-to-get-more\/\">good night\u2019s sleep<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/stress-depression-and-dementia-underlying-reasons-and-remedies\/\">stress management<\/a>. Actually Dr. Bredesen notes they found 36 components of the network that is<a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/the-underlying-causes-of-memory-loss-are-you-at-risk\/\"> out of balance in Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, that can be rectified. (In chapter 3 of our book we identify 52 elements to be looked at, but there are likely even more that could be included.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The point here is that there are at least 36 things that can go wrong, and contribute to AD, and every \u201cbody\u201d is different. So, although most people with cognitive impairments have some things in common, a personalized program for each individual, focused on their particular issues and needs, eventually becomes essential for optimal outcomes. That is what we <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/2009-10-17-testimonials-from-three-levels-of-impairment\/\">have been advocating and using<\/a> in our personal consults, and that is the approach Dr. Bredesen took with each of the 10 participants in his study. And amazingly (though not surprisingly) 9 out of 10 of them improved! The only one who did not improve was in the later stages of Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note, however, that Dr. Bredesen is careful not to claim that he has reversed the disease, as his measures can only substantiate a \u00a0reversal in symptoms. But those of course are what most people are most concerned about.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">To his credit Dr. Bredesen used some modalities that, although I have talked about and use some of them myself, like meditation and periodic fasting, I haven\u2019t advocated them well for others. These include yoga, and some <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/2009-07-05-medicaid-patients-face-roadblock-to-getting-alzheimers-drug\/\">medications<\/a>, as well as meditation and daily fasting. (Fasting is advocated by <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/how-to-prevent-alzheimers-disease-a-neurologist-speaks-out\/\">Dr. Perlmutter<\/a> in <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\"><i>Grain Brain<\/i><\/b><i style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">,<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\"> and has been shown to trigger powerful protective forces in the brain &#8211; like glutathione &#8211; as well as enhancing cognition and memory. But it seems more appropriate for younger chubby people than older more frail seniors.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">The first 10 patients who have utilized this program included patients with memory loss associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease (AD), amnestic <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/memory-tests-plus-brain-scans-blood-tests-detect-early-stages-of-ad\/\">mild cognitive impairment<\/a> (aMCI), or <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/when-should-you-be-concerned-subjective-cognitive-impairment\/\">subjective cognitive impairment <\/a>(SCI).\u00a0That is the one weakness. It appears that most of these individuals were younger (under the age of 70) and had milder forms of impairment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, having 9 out of the 10 individuals with significant impairments display improvements in cognition within 3 to 6 months is remarkable!\u00a0Six of the patients had had to discontinue working or were struggling with their jobs when they began the program, and all were able to return to work or continue working with improved performance.\u00a0Improvements have been sustained, and at this time the longest patient follow-up is two and one half years from initial treatment, with sustained and marked improvement.<\/p>\n<p>As noted the program is quite comprehensive. For a good example of his approach see his first case protocol for a 67-year-old woman who presented with two years of\u00a0progressive memory loss. She held a demanding job that involved preparing analytical reports, but found herself no longer able to analyze data, calculate numbers or prepare the reports, and therefore was forced to consider quitting her job. Here is what helped:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">(1) she <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/how-to-prevent-alzheimers-disease-a-neurologist-speaks-out\/\">eliminated all simple carbohydrates<\/a>, leading to a weight loss of 20 pounds; (2) she <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/how-to-prevent-alzheimers-disease-a-neurologist-speaks-out\/\">eliminated gluten<\/a> and processed food from her diet, and increased <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/are-fruits-and-veggies-the-key-to-happiness\/\">vegetables, fruits,<\/a> and non-farmed <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/the-omega-3-fatty-acid-dha-and-cognitive-decline\/\">fish<\/a>; (3) in order <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/autogenic-training\/\">to reduce stress<\/a>, she began yoga, and ultimately became a yoga instructor; (4) as a second measure to reduce the stress of her job, she began to meditate for 20 minutes twice per day; (5) she took <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/sleep-is-your-brain-getting-enough-how-to-get-more\/\">melatonin <\/a>0.5mg; (6) she <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/sleep-is-your-brain-getting-enough-how-to-get-more\/\">increased her sleep<\/a> from 4-5 hours per night to 7-8\u00a0<\/span>hours per night; (7) she took <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levitamins.com\/16942\/ProductDetails?item=01735\">methylcobalamin<\/a> 1mg each day; (8) she took <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/better-than-flu-shots\/\">vitamin D3<\/a> 2000IU <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/2009-10-30-vitamin-d-curcumin-may-prevent-and-treat-alzheimers\/\">each day<\/a>; (9) she took<a href=\"https:\/\/www.levitamins.com\/16942\/ProductDetails?item=01483\"> fish oil <\/a>2000mg each day; (10) she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levitamins.com\/16942\/ProductDetails?item=00949\">took CoQ10<\/a>\u00a0200mg each day; (11) she optimized her oral hygiene using an electric flosser and electric toothbrush; (12) following discussion with her primary care provider,\u00a0she reinstated HRT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levitamins.com\/16942\/ProductDetails?item=01897\">(hormone replacement<\/a> therapy) that had been discontinued following the WHI report in 2002; (13) she fasted for a minimum of 12 hours\u00a0between dinner and breakfast, and for a minimum of three hours between dinner and bedtime; (14) she <a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/practical-physical-exercise-tips\/\">exercised for a minimum<\/a> of 30 minutes, 4-6 days per week.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">If you would like to see and hear Dr. Bredesen talk about his approach go to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ktla.com\/2014\/09\/29\/a-ground-breaking-treatment-at-ucla-improves-failing-memories-of-some-patients\/\">http:\/\/ktla.com\/2014\/09\/29\/a-ground-breaking-treatment-at-ucla-improves-failing-memories-of-some-patients\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Fortunately, unlike the Finland study, Dr. Bredesen has written up his entire report and included a chart containing an outline of his entire therapeutic system for anyone to use.
