{"id":1115,"date":"2018-06-07T09:57:55","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/?p=1115"},"modified":"2018-06-08T07:57:09","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T13:57:09","slug":"how-to-respond-to-the-myth-that-nothing-can-prevent-or-slow-alzheimers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/how-to-respond-to-the-myth-that-nothing-can-prevent-or-slow-alzheimers\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Respond to the Myth that Nothing can prevent or slow Alzheimer\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/AD-brain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1116\" src=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/AD-brain-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/AD-brain-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/AD-brain-64x64.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>I\u2019ve been reminded 4 times in the last 3 days on public TV that not everyone is as enlightened as you are! \u00a0June is Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Brain Awareness month, but despite the various <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/4abettermemory.com\/memory\/now-the-whole-world-will-know-the-key-to-cognitive-health\/\">new revelations to the contrary<\/a> <\/strong>\u00a0awareness is lacking and the myth persists in the media and traditional medical minds that:\u00a0 \u201cNothing can be done to prevent, or slow the progression of Alzheimer\u2019s disease (AD).\u201d \u00a0This standard old school rhetoric has now been soundly shown to be false!\u00a0 But it appears we will need your help in dispelling this destructive myth from the minds of your friends and loved ones. \u00a0And why is this misinformaiton so destructive and dangerous?<\/p>\n<p>This disempowering message, has likely discouraged millions of seniors from doing the very things needed and\u00a0 shown to be effective to delay or avoid this plague. \u00a0As one elderly gentleman told me, \u201cI don\u2019t even want to know if I\u2019m at risk for Alzheimer\u2019s as there is nothing I can do to prevent it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how can you respond to such dogmatic disabling ignorance? (By ingnorance I mean ignoring the latest evidence.)\u00a0 How can you correct this misinformation and provide the hope that is needed to make the effort required to delay or prevent this terrible epidemic?<\/p>\n<p>In January I provided a decent review of this research, citing several studies from Dr. Kivipelto of the Karolinska institute in Stockholm, Dr. Bredesen from UCLA,\u00a0doctors Dean and Ayesha Sherzai, from Loma Linda Medical Center, and Dr. Fotuhi former Science Director for the Alzheimer\u2019s Association. All of these, highly qualified and esteemed Alzheimer\u2019s experts have shown in empirical studies that Alzheimer\u2019s can in fact be delayed, prevented, and in many if not most cases reversed if caught soon enough. You may want to reread and share that newsletter with any doubters. And\/or simply share this link to a fascinating interview between a world renown heart surgeon and Dr. Bredesen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZK0RqkErLSA\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZK0RqkErLSA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note Bredesen has now turned around 100&#8217;s of well documented cases of cognitive decline due to Alzheimer\u2019s, even in people who had inherited the ApoE-4 &#8220;Alzheimer&#8217;s&#8221; gene from both parents!\u00a0 These individuals definitely had AD, no question, and yet he was able to reverse their decline, and even restore brain cell volume in the hippocampus! \u2013 the memory center of the brain. It&#8217;s reduced volume is a hallmark of advanced Alzheimer\u2019s. Obviously, if you can reverse Alzheimer\u2019s you can prevent it, as Dr. Bredesen asserts in his interview, and now best seller, <em>The End of Alzheimer\u2019s. <\/em>Any sincere skeptic ought to read that book.<\/p>\n<p>In the first chapter of our book, <strong><em>How to Maintain A Healthy Brain and Escape the Epidemic of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/em><\/strong>, we site these and several other studies, like the Wales study, which showed a 60% reduction in all cause dementia cases, including Alzheimer\u2019s, following a few simple lifestyle measures over time. On July 20<span style=\"font-size: 11.6667px;\">, 2017, i<\/span>n the most definitive review of this research to date, 24 world class experts commissioned by Lancet to report on this topic noted that even though \u201cOne systematic review\u00a0found no evidence that any <strong><u>drug<\/u><\/strong> interventions delay conversion to dementia\u201d p.5. \u00a0\u201cThere is\u00a0<strong><u>good evidence<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong><u>treatment of hypertension reduces dementia incidence<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0[including Alzheimer\u2019s]\u2026, and improvement in brain reserve combined with\u00a0<strong><u>interventions known to prevent damage<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0are ways to promote resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on that study\u00a0 Lon Schneider, MD, from the University of Southern California a co-author of the Commission study, noted:\u00a0&#8220;Overall,\u00a0<strong>there is good potential for prevention<\/strong>\u00a0and,\u2026 Effective dementia prevention and care could transform the future for society and vastly improve living and dying for individuals with dementia and their families.\u00a0<strong><u>Acting now<\/u> on\u00a0<u>what we already know<\/u>\u00a0can make this difference happen<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0(July 22, 2017 interview \u2013 alz.org)<\/p>\n<p>And if that isn\u2019t evidence enough, we have this statement from the extra cautious Alzheimer\u2019s Association themselves:<br \/>\nIn their press release dated July 19, 2017 the Alzheimer\u2019s Association announced<\/p>\n<p>The launch of their $20 million \u201cLIFESTYLE INTERVENTION TRIAL IN THE U.S. TO PREVENT COGNITIVE DECLINE.\u201d In their announcement they noted:<\/p>\n<p>At AAIC 2014, Miia Kivipelto, M.D., Ph.D., Professor at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden and the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland, and colleagues reported on the results of the FINGER Study \u2013 the first randomized controlled trial <strong>showing that it is\u00a0<u>possible to prevent<\/u>\u00a0cognitive decline using a multi-domain lifestyle <u>intervention<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0among older at-risk individuals\u2026.The FINGER model is now being replicated in the United States, Europe, Singapore, and Australia \u2013 including people from a variety of geographical and cultural backgrounds.\u201d (And just so we are clear, that \u201ccognitive decline\u201d includes Alzheimer\u2019s.)<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, as Dr. Bredesen points out in his dementia reversal course for practitioners, \u00a0which I am now completing as part of my continuing ed, Alzheimer\u2019s, like a variety of other disorders, including heart disease, results from a variety of preventable or modifiable risk factors, like the over consumption of sugar or diabetes, malnutrition, high blood pressure, hearing disorders, smoking, chronic and oxidative stress and anxiety, gingivitis, lack of sleep, etc..\u00a0 These are all disorders or behaviors that can be prevented, or at least slowed down or modified, and by doing so, most cases of Alzheimer\u2019s could be avoided \u2013 the Bredesen and Sherzai research suggests up to 90%!
